Year 5

In Year 5 children continue to follow the National Curriculum and in addition they learn a modern foreign language, French. The National Curriculum sets out what children should be taught and what they should be able to do at each stage of their education. English and Mathematics form the core of our work and the majority of basic skills are taught as discrete units. However, we recognise the importance of making learning meaningful and memorable for children and try to make creative links between the different areas of learning whenever we can.

Reading – Children must read once per day and write a comment about what they have read. Each morning they present their reading records to the class teacher to show what they have done at home. Class teacher reads with the children 1:1 once over a fortnightly rotation, this works out at roughly 3-5 children a day. Once a week, the children take part in a larger group reading session focussed on developing their individual reading targets and their comprehension skills. All children have a reading target that is designed to help them develop skills needed to move to the higher level.
