Year 2

In Year 2 we, as all schools, follow the National Curriculum. This comprises eleven subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Design and Technology, Physical Education and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education. We also have weekly RE lessons, following Wandsworth agreed syllabus.

Reading

Your child will be given books and a Reading Record which are changed once a week. Frequent reading sessions at home with you are key to your child’s success.

 Number bonds

Your child will be also be given number bond homework every Friday. They will be tested on this in class the following Friday in a one minute test! The reason the test is so quick is because we want the children to remember their number bonds rather than to work them out each time.  When tested they will be asked 10 questions in the format:   _ + 17 = 30

Please see the Broadwater Maths Booklet for further information on helping your child with Numeracy.

 Spellings

Your child will be given a set of words to learn throughout the week. They  will be tested on these in class on Friday. We encourage using the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method.

Look at the word

Say the word

Cover the word

Write the word

Check their spelling against the word.

Your child will benefit from frequent practice using this technique. Some children will need daily practice and others less frequent sessions. It is also useful to review spellings from previous weeks to consolidate the learning and to ensure that these have formed part of your child’s stock of learnt vocabulary.
