By the time children come to school at the age of three they have already taken major steps towards independence and developed a wide range of abilities.  Most have an impressive range of physical and social skills and a constantly growing understanding of the world in which they live.  Most are verbally competent, often in more than one language and each has his or her own particular talents and needs to which we respond.  At Broadwater we aim to plan activities and experiences which will help all children to make progress in their development and learning and to do this in a caring and child-centred way.

Principles on which the Foundation Stage curriculum is based:

Children learn by doing rather than by being told.  Active learning should be the fundamental principle that underpins the curriculum.

Play is the main medium through which children learn about themselves and the world they live in.  The curriculum needs to reflect that.

Children learn most effectively through active participation within a familiar context: in a safe, secure and stimulating environment: when they are motivated and interested, and when they feel confident in themselves and their own abilities.

Children need to be encouraged to be independent and autonomous in their learning, to think in a positive way about themselves so that they feel respected as individuals, whose cultures and language are valued.

Adults need to be seen as positive enablers, giving confidence and offering choices, aware of when to support learning and when to teach, in ensuring quality of learning experiences for all children.

Children need time and space to produce work of quality and depth.  Appropriate planning, evaluation, resourcing, organisation and management enables them to have this time and space.

 Children grow and develop at different rates.  Adults need to identify and promote children’s individual abilities and strengths, offering children opportunities and challenges to experiment and succeed.

Children do not separate their learning into subject areas but learn from everything that happens to them.  The curriculum needs to take account of all the experiences of young children and to take as a starting point what children can do rather than what they cannot do.

Parents are the child’s first educators.  An early years curriculum should ensure a dialogue with the home and the community, actively encourage involvement and promote shared understandings.

The Foundation Stage curriculum needs to be panned to meet the needs of individual children, building on and valuing previous experiences that include those of the home culture and community, ensuring equal access to all aspects of the curriculum for all children.
